The short answer

This ledger currently covers UEFA Champions League titles for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Copa América titles for Messi. It is not a complete trophy count, so no overall total is shown.

Team titles are collective achievements. A credited title is not the same as playing in the winning final, and nothing here measures individual ability.

The ledger

Verified team titles, one row per competition and team

Each row names the competition, the team, the editions credited and the publisher that credits them. Messi's rows appear first and Ronaldo's second, as on every page of this site.

UEFA credits Ronaldo with five Champions League titles across Manchester United and Real Madrid; the two rows above split that figure by team.

Messi's Champions League editions are as credited by FC Barcelona's historical profile of his completed spell. A matching UEFA edition check is not yet recorded here.

Rows record titles credited to the player, not appearances in the final. Absence of a row means not yet audited, never zero.

Why there is no total

Adding these rows together would produce a number that looks like a career trophy count but covers only two competitions. Until every category below is audited under one eligibility rule, any combined figure would mislead. The Honours and records hub explains the counting policy in full.

Title versus final

A credited title is not the same as playing in the final

A squad wins a competition across a whole edition: group matches, knockout rounds and the final. A player can be credited with that title without appearing in the deciding match, and a player can appear in a final that his team loses.

This ledger records titles only. It does not say whether either player started, came on or was absent in a given final. A separate, audited ledger of actual final appearances would be needed for that question, and it is not part of this starter edition.

A title and an appearance in a winning final are different measures.

Coverage gaps

Not yet in this ledger, for either player

The categories below have not been audited edition by edition for Messi or for Ronaldo. They are listed here so that the ledger's silence is not mistaken for absence of honours. Each will be added only after edition dates, team and player eligibility are checked against a direct publisher record.

  1. Domestic league and cup titles

League championships, national cups and domestic super cups for every club spell.

  2. Other club competitions

Continental super cups, club world competitions and any other organiser-recognised club titles.

  3. World Cup, EURO and Nations League titles

Senior international titles outside the Copa América. Ronaldo's international team titles are not yet audited; nothing should be inferred from their absence here. Tournament records sit on Copa América and EURO.

  4. Youth and Olympic honours

Age-restricted titles will be kept in their own category and never merged with senior honours.

  5. Regional and special tournaments

Regional, invitational and friendly trophies need a stated inclusion rule before any appear; some club profiles list them alongside senior titles.

Reading the ledger

UEFA credits Ronaldo with five Champions League titles with two clubs; FC Barcelona credits Messi with four, all with one club. CONMEBOL records Messi's Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.

One reading is that both players were part of squads that won Europe's leading club competition repeatedly across the same broad era. That observation says something about the teams around them as well as about the players, which is why this page marks no lead in any row.

For individual scoring in the same competition, see Messi vs Ronaldo in the Champions League. Individual awards are kept separately on Ballon d'Or: Messi and Ronaldo year by year, and dated, qualified records on Records and milestones. How titles and matches are counted is set out in the Methodology, and every source's access status is listed on Sources and data limitations.
