International comparisons: scope before totals
What can be compared for Argentina and Portugal, what is verified so far, and why this edition does not publish a current career-total headline.
The short answer
This edition compares only completed continental final tournaments: Copa América for Lionel Messi and the EURO for Cristiano Ronaldo, each through its 2024 edition.
Current senior international caps and goals for Argentina and Portugal have not yet been reconciled to one common cutoff, so no current career-total comparison is published here.
Eligibility
Which international matches count
The same rules apply to both players on every international page. They are set out in full on the methodology page.
Senior A internationals only
Only recognised matches for the senior national team of Argentina or Portugal are eligible.
Friendlies included, but identified separately
Recognised senior international friendlies count towards a senior total, but their contribution is shown apart from competitive matches.
Youth and Olympic matches excluded
Under-age internationals and Olympic football are kept out of the default senior total for both players.
Shootout kicks are never goals
Penalty-shootout kicks are recorded separately and never added to match goals or to in-match penalty totals.
One cutoff for both players
A career comparison stops at a single date verified for both players. Totals from different dates are never placed side by side.
Evidence status
What is verified in this edition
The table below shows the status of each international measure. Unknown values are shown as unknown, never as zero.
- Scope
- Senior A internationals, Argentina and Portugal
- Cutoff
- Evidence status as checked 7 Oct 2026; continental rows through 2024 editions

Continental rows count final-tournament matches only; qualifying is excluded. Copa América and the EURO differ in format, edition frequency and number of matches, so no lead is marked. Full detail is on the Copa América and EURO page. | ||
Why there is no current career headline yet
The independent RSSSF match logs for both players were readable, but the last listed matches are 14 November 2025 for Messi and 13 November 2025 for Ronaldo.
Those logs are a useful historical record. They are not an October 2026 record, and presenting them as current would mislead readers about what the figures cover.
A later UEFA article, dated 29 September 2026, lists both players among leading international scorers.
A dated article is not the same as a confirmed included-match cutoff. Before its totals can stand as a headline, each match for Argentina and Portugal between the end of the RSSSF logs and that article needs to be checked and classified.
Discrepancy policy
Figures from different sources and dates are never blended or averaged. Where two publishers disagree, the difference is investigated at match level and recorded, not smoothed over.
The World Cup in this edition
FIFA's 2026 World Cup player statistics and its all-time appearances article were found through search indexing, but direct retrieval returned an empty page.
Because the 2026 tournament figures could not be read directly from FIFA, no World Cup comparison is published in this edition. Older, pre-2026 totals are not recycled as all-time figures on a 2026 site.
For the difference between totals, rates and matching periods, read how to compare Messi and Ronaldo fairly. Team titles won with Argentina and Portugal are covered under honours and records.
