Records and milestones, dated and qualified

Each record or milestone on this page names its competition, its value, the player and the date of the publisher list behind it. Nothing here is a live record.

The short answer

UEFA's all-time Champions League lists, excluding qualifying, are led by Cristiano Ronaldo for both goals (140) and appearances (183). Lionel Messi has 129 goals and 163 appearances on the same lists. The two players are level on eight Champions League hat-trick matches each.

On this page, 'most' always means most within the named competition, as listed on the publisher's date. Historical records can later be broken, and this page does not update automatically.

Competition records

Champions League all-time lists

UEFA publishes separate all-time lists for goals and appearances in the competition proper. Both lists below use that scope, so the two players can be compared directly. The full competition comparison, including goals per appearance and titles, is on the Champions League page.

Qualifying matches are excluded from both rows. Other UEFA history views that include qualifying show 141 goals for Ronaldo; that figure is not mixed into this table.

Appearances measure exposure to the competition, so no lead marker is placed on that row. Ronaldo heads UEFA's appearance list.

Continental final tournaments

EURO and Copa América milestones

Messi plays in the Copa América and Ronaldo in the EURO. These are different tournaments with different formats and different numbers of editions, so the rows below sit in one ledger without a lead marker. The side-by-side treatment is on the Copa América and EURO page.

The Copa América figure comes from CONMEBOL's report published after the 2024 final; an opening-day report from the same tournament gives an earlier, lower count and is not used.

UEFA's EURO figures exclude qualifying. Shootout kicks are not match goals.

Season and calendar-year milestones

A season is not a calendar year

A club season runs across two calendar years; a calendar year runs from January to December and cuts across two seasons. The rows below keep each label exactly as the publisher used it, and none of them is compared with the others.

The 91 goals belong to calendar year 2012, not to the 2011/12 season. The match set behind that total has not been audited here, so it is not used as a denominator or set against any other figure.

Each row covers a different competition and period. They are listed as milestones, not as rival claims.

Caveat

Barcelona's profile is a club source written after a completed spell. Its figures are reproduced with the club named as publisher. Fuller year-by-year comparisons need a dated match ledger for both players, which this starter edition does not yet hold.

Shared milestone

Eight Champions League hat-trick matches each

UEFA's detailed Champions League article on Ronaldo lists eight hat-trick matches for each player in the competition proper. A hat-trick match is any match with three or more goals by the player, so a four-goal match counts once.

The figures are level, so no lead marker appears. A separate count of four-goal matches has not been verified for both players and is not shown.

Scope and status

Historical facts, not live records

Every figure on this page is a historical publisher fact with a date. The two players were both still active when these lists were published, and other players are too. A record that stands on the list date can be equalled or broken later.

One reading is that the Champions League goals lead also reflects twenty more appearances in the competition. Rates and exposure are covered in How to compare fairly, and the counting rules are on the Methodology page.

Questions

Reading these records

Why does this page say 140 Champions League goals, not 141?

UEFA's all-time scoring list of 8 Sep 2026 excludes qualifying and gives Ronaldo 140. UEFA's detailed Ronaldo article identifies a qualifying goal, which explains the 141 shown in some qualifying-inclusive views. This site uses the competition proper by default.

Why is there no lead marker on the continental milestones?

The Copa América and the EURO are different competitions with different formats and edition counts. Raw totals from the two cannot show which record is harder to reach.

Is Messi's 2012 total a season record?

No. Barcelona reports 91 goals for calendar year 2012. His 50 La Liga goals belong to the 2011/12 season. The two periods overlap but are not the same.
