The short answer

Through the 2024 editions, Lionel Messi has 39 Copa América final-tournament appearances and two titles, in 2021 and 2024. Cristiano Ronaldo has 30 EURO final-tournament appearances and 14 goals.

These are different competitions with different formats and opportunities, so this page declares no lead in either direction.

Two separate panels

Each record in its own competition

The two panels below are deliberately kept apart. A merged table would invite a row-by-row lead that the competitions cannot support. Each panel shows only figures read directly from the responsible organiser, and marks the values not yet verified instead of filling them for symmetry.

Goals count match goals only, including official extra time; penalty-shootout kicks never enter the goal total.

EURO qualifying matches are excluded from both rows.

Why two cells are empty

Messi's Copa América goal total and Ronaldo's EURO title count have not yet been verified against the organiser's own record for this edition of the site. They appear as dashes, never as zero, and will be added only after a direct check. The site-wide title ledger lives on Team trophies.

Why raw totals do not measure difficulty

The Copa América and the EURO are both continental championships, but they have not been staged on the same timetable. Edition frequency, the number of participating teams, squad sizes and group structures have all varied, between the two competitions and within each one over time.

One reading is that a higher appearance total partly reflects how many editions a player was available for and how far his team progressed, as well as his own form. Neither figure here should be read as a judgement on which tournament was harder to play in or win.

How to compare fairly

Reading these records

CONMEBOL lists 39 Copa América appearances for Messi and confirms his second title, at the 2024 tournament. UEFA lists 30 EURO final-tournament appearances and 14 goals for Ronaldo, separately from qualifying.

The appearance figures sit in the same unit, but not in the same competition, so placing 39 beside 30 says something about longevity at each tournament rather than about relative quality. The goal and title rows cannot be compared at all yet, because one value in each pair is not yet verified.

How shootouts are recorded

UEFA's EURO match table records penalty-shootout outcomes as wins or losses. This site keeps the match score and the shootout result as separate facts: a match level after extra time is recorded as a draw, with the shootout outcome noted beside it. Shootout kicks are never counted as goals or as in-match penalties. The full rule is set out in the methodology.

Reader questions

Questions about this comparison

Why is no lead shown on this page?

A lead marker is only used when definitions and coverage match. Here the competitions themselves differ, and in two rows one player's value is not yet verified, so no row meets that standard.

Are qualifying matches included?

No. Both panels cover final tournaments only. Qualifiers belong to a different match category and are not mixed into these figures.

Why use the July 2024 Copa América report?

It was published after the 2024 final, so it covers the completed edition. Reports from the opening days of that tournament carry an earlier, lower appearance count.
