Honours and records: team titles and individual awards
A guide to what Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won. Collective team titles, individual awards and dated records are kept in separate columns, and each has a visible counting rule.
The short answer
Team titles are shared achievements won by a squad. Individual awards are given to one player. This site keeps the two apart and does not publish a single all-in trophy count for either player.
The figures below are dated subsets. They are not complete honours lists, and they should not be added together.
Team honours
Selected team titles, each with its crediting source
Two categories are verified so far: Champions League titles and senior continental titles. The team trophies ledger lists every verified edition. It also names the categories not yet audited for either player.
- Scope
- Senior team titles credited to the player; not appearances in winning finals
- Cutoff
- Messi UCL: Barcelona spell to 2021 · Ronaldo UCL: UEFA, 28 Jul 2026 · Copa América: through 2024
- Source
- FC Barcelona · UEFA · CONMEBOL
| Metric | Messi | Ronaldo |
|---|---|---|
| Champions League titlesCrediting source differs by player | 4Barcelona: 2005/06, 2008/09, 2010/11, 2014/15Attributed to club | 5UEFA: across Manchester United and Real MadridVerified |
| Senior continental titlesCopa América for Messi; EURO for Ronaldo | 2Copa América 2021 and 2024Verified | —Not yet verified |
Messi's Champions League row counts titles that FC Barcelona credits to him in its historical profile. Ronaldo's row counts titles that UEFA credits to him. No lead is marked. Team titles are collective, the crediting sources differ, and EURO and Copa América are different tournaments. The EURO title row for Ronaldo awaits a direct check of the publisher's record. | ||
Caveat
Each row is one verified category, not a total. Domestic league titles, domestic cups, other club competitions and the World Cup have not yet been audited edition by edition. They are therefore not shown here.
Individual awards
Ballon d'Or wins through the 2025 award
The organiser's own year list is the reference for this award. Other award families, such as FIFA's, are not counted as additional Ballons d'Or. The Ballon d'Or year ledger shows every year from 2008 to 2025, including 2020, when no award was made.
- Scope
- Men's Ballon d'Or only

VerifiedCristiano Ronaldo
5 awards
VerifiedThe Ballon d'Or organiser lists eight wins for Messi and five for Ronaldo in its history up to and including 2025. These two figures share one award, one organiser and one cutoff, so they compare directly. One reading is that this measures how each player's seasons were judged by a voting panel. It does not measure output on the pitch.

Selected records
Records, each with its population and date
A record only means something when its population, competition and date are stated. The records and milestones page qualifies each one. Examples include the following:
- Messi's 50 La Liga goals in the 2011/12 season, as listed by FC Barcelona.
- The 91 goals Barcelona's profile reports for Messi in calendar year 2012. This is a different period from the 2011/12 season.
- Ronaldo's 17 Champions League goals in 2013/14, competition proper, as listed by UEFA.
- Ronaldo's 14 EURO final-tournament goals through EURO 2024.
Historical records can later be broken. Every entry on that page therefore carries the date of its source.

How honours are counted on this site
These rules apply to every honours page. The general eligibility rules are set out in the methodology.
One row per competition edition
A title is counted once for its edition and team. Seasons are deduplicated, so the same title is never counted under two labels.
Senior honours stand alone
Youth, Olympic, regional and friendly honours are listed separately, if they are listed at all. They are never folded into a senior total.
Squad membership is not the same as playing in the final
A title credited to a player and an appearance in a winning final are recorded as different measures.
Award families stay distinct
The Ballon d'Or is counted from its organiser's list. Other awards are added only once they are verified, and only under their own names.
The crediting source is shown
Where a club rather than a competition organiser credits a title, the row carries the 'Attributed to club' label.
No all-in trophy total
Team titles and individual awards are never added together. No single trophy number is published for either player.
A title and an appearance in a winning final are different measures.
