The short answer

Every published figure on this site comes from one of eight publisher pages: UEFA, CONMEBOL, the Ballon d'Or organiser and the two clubs' historical profiles. All eight were read directly on 7 October 2026.

The other twelve records supply definitions, discovery leads or historical cross-checks, or could not be read. Being in the registry does not mean a source supplied a usable figure.

Group 1 · Published figures

Sources used for published figures

These are the only pages a figure on this site can come from. Each figure is used within the scope stated by its publisher. Where a source carries a cutoff, it is the publication or completed-period date shown below, not the date the page was read.

Verified = the publisher page was read directly and the figure is used only within the scope the publisher states.

Attributed to club = the figure follows the club's own goal attribution and has not been reconciled to a match-level ledger.

Club profiles also carry older international and award details. Those details are not used as current figures.

Group 2 · Definitions and discovery

Definitions and context, not figures

These pages shape how figures are labelled and help find questions worth checking. None of them is the source of a number published here.

Group 3 · Historical checks

Historical cross-checks, not current totals

These sources help reconcile senior international records. Their dates do not match each other or the present, so no current international career total on this site is built from them.

A search result is a discovery aid, not evidence. Pages that cannot be read directly do not support figures.

Known disagreements

Where sources disagree

Conflicting counts are never averaged. Each one is labelled with the scope it belongs to.

Champions League · 140 or 141

UEFA's scorers list gives Ronaldo 140 goals with qualifying excluded. UEFA's detailed Ronaldo article identifies one qualifying goal, and other UEFA history views show 141. This site uses 140 for the competition proper and labels the qualifying goal separately.

Real Madrid · club attribution

Real Madrid's profile credits Ronaldo with 451 goals in 438 competitive appearances, using the club's own attribution. The figure is shown as attributed to the club. It is not added into any career ledger that uses a different counting rule.

Copa América · completed edition

An opening-day 2024 report gives Messi an earlier cumulative appearance count. This site uses the end-of-tournament figure of 39 from CONMEBOL's report of 23 July 2024.

EURO · shootout results

UEFA's EURO table counts shootout outcomes as wins or losses. This site records the match score and the shootout outcome separately. Shootout kicks never count as match goals.

Coverage gaps

What this edition cannot yet answer

No free source inspected so far provides a verified, consistently defined, complete-career dataset for both players. The comparisons below are held back rather than estimated. A smaller site with supported headlines is preferred to a larger one without them.

How the counting rules work
  1. Current career totals

No reconciled, dated ledger of club and senior international matches exists yet for either player.

  2. Career assists

No assist convention has consistent coverage across both careers. See why assist totals differ.

  3. Minutes and per-90 rates

Complete minutes are not verified for any matching match set, so this edition uses no per-90 rates.

  4. Penalties and direct free kicks

Full attempt-level ledgers are unavailable. Shootout kicks are kept apart in any case.

  5. World Cup tables

FIFA's edition tables could not be read directly, and no World Cup figures from before 2026 are presented as all-time totals.

  6. Head-to-head and El Clásico

A ledger of matches in which both players appeared has not been audited.

  7. Other club spells

Records for Sporting CP, both Manchester United spells, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Al Nassr in all competitions and Inter Miami in all competitions still need record checks.

  8. A complete trophy ledger

Team titles are listed only where verified. Deduplicated senior, youth, regional and special honours have not been audited for either player.

Reuse, access dates and revisions

All twenty records were inspected on 7 October 2026. That access date is not a statistical cutoff. Each figure's cutoff is the publication date or completed period shown beside it.

None of these publishers has granted bulk-reuse rights to this site, and the site claims no affiliation with any of them. Figures are cited with links; publishers' prose, tables and logos are not reproduced.

This is a static edition. Nothing updates automatically. No revisions have been recorded since the edition was prepared. If you can show a figure is wrong, with a direct publisher link, use the contact and corrections page.
