Club comparisons: which contexts are comparable
A guide to the club evidence. It shows which records can be set side by side and which must stay apart. Two completed spell records appear here, each under its own label.
The short answer
In this edition, the UEFA Champions League competition proper is the only club scope where both players have matching published evidence. It has its own comparison page.
The Barcelona and Real Madrid records below are shown separately. They are not set against each other, because the spells differ in length and the clubs count goals under their own conventions.
Career spells
Two completed spells, two separate records
Each club publishes a historical profile of its former player. The figures are reproduced exactly as listed, with the publisher named. They cover different periods, so this page calculates no rates and marks no lead.

Why these are not a head-to-head
Same country, different measures
Both spells took place mainly in Spain, so placing the two tables side by side can look natural. The evidence does not yet support it.
The spells differ in length
Messi's Barcelona record ends in 2021. Ronaldo's Madrid record covers 2009 to 2018. Unequal spells produce unequal totals regardless of output per match.
The counting conventions differ
FC Barcelona's figures are verified for their stated scope. Real Madrid's 451 goals reflect the club's own attribution and are labelled accordingly.
The 451 figure stays on its own
It is not merged into any career ledger or set against a total counted under another rule. See Methodology for the discrepancy policy.
Domestic leagues
La Liga: one verified figure, no comparison yet
FC Barcelona lists 474 La Liga goals for Messi across his Barcelona spell.
No Ronaldo La Liga figure for his Madrid years has been verified against competition records. The club's 451 is an all-competition count and cannot stand in for a league-only total. This edition therefore shows no league comparison. A one-sided table would suggest a contest the evidence cannot yet settle.
The overlapping era, from 2009/10 to 2017/18, raises the same issue. It is the fairest window for a Spanish comparison, but it needs both players' season totals for exactly those nine seasons. Those totals are not yet verified, so that comparison is held rather than approximated. For why equal periods matter more than whole spells, see How to compare fairly. Dated single-season figures appear on Records and milestones.
Not yet verified
No figures are published here for Messi at Paris Saint-Germain or Inter Miami, or for Ronaldo at Sporting CP, Manchester United, Juventus or Al Nassr. The MLS and Saudi Pro League statistics pages did not display usable tables when checked, and their placeholder zeros were not treated as statistics. The Sources page records these gaps.
