The short answer

Cristiano Ronaldo has more Champions League goals (140 to Lionel Messi's 129) and more appearances (183 to 163). Messi has the higher goals-per-appearance rate (0.79 to 0.77). They are level on hat-trick matches, with eight each.

All figures cover the competition proper only, with qualifying excluded, as listed by UEFA in September 2026. Titles are shown separately because they are team achievements.

Goals and appearances

The competition-proper record

UEFA's all-time scoring and appearance lists both state that qualifying matches are excluded. That shared rule makes these rows a like-for-like comparison.

Goals per appearance = goals ÷ appearances, calculated from the unrounded counts and shown to two decimals (129 ÷ 163 and 140 ÷ 183).

Qualifying matches are excluded from every row. Appearances count matches played and say nothing about playing time.

No per-90 rate is shown because complete minutes for both players are not in the verified set. Minutes are not estimated.

Hat-trick matches

Eight matches each with three or more goals

A match with four or more goals still counts once as a hat-trick match. Both figures come from the same UEFA article, under the same competition-proper rule.

Titles

Champions League titles, a team achievement

Titles are won by squads, not individuals, so no lead marker appears here. These are titles credited to each player. They are not a count of appearances in winning finals, which is a different measure.

Messi's four titles are those credited to him by FC Barcelona's historical profile. Ronaldo's five are credited by UEFA across Manchester United and Real Madrid. An edition-by-edition list for Ronaldo is not part of this verified set.

A title is not the same as playing in the winning final. Final-match appearances are not counted here.

Qualifying-count explanation

Why some sources show 141 for Ronaldo

UEFA's detailed Ronaldo article identifies a goal he scored in a qualifying match. Other UEFA history views show 141 for Ronaldo because they include qualifying. The 140 figure used on this page excludes it, as UEFA's scoring list states.

A qualifying-inclusive figure for Messi is not verified in this edition. For that reason, 140 against 129 is the like-for-like comparison, and the qualifying-inclusive count is noted only for Ronaldo, labelled as such.

Read the counting rules

Reading the numbers

UEFA lists 140 competition-proper goals for Ronaldo in 183 appearances, and 129 for Messi in 163.

One reading is that Ronaldo's higher total reflects both scoring and longevity in the competition: he has 20 more appearances. Messi's rate per appearance is slightly higher, but the gap of 0.02 is small. Appearances also include substitute outings of any length, so the rate is not a measure of scoring per minute played. Without complete minutes, a per-90 comparison cannot be published.

Neither figure settles who was the better Champions League player. Each answers a narrower question, either volume or frequency per match. For more on totals versus rates, see How to compare fairly. Dated competition records drawn from these lists appear on Records and milestones. Other club contexts are covered on the Club comparisons hub.

Questions

Common questions about this comparison

Why is qualifying excluded?

UEFA's all-time scoring and appearance lists use the competition proper. Using that rule for both players keeps the comparison like for like. Ronaldo's qualifying goal is noted separately above.

Why is there no goals-per-90 figure?

A per-90 rate needs complete minutes for the same set of matches. Those minutes are not verified for both players, and this site does not estimate them.

Why do titles carry no lead marker?

Titles are collective team achievements, and the two counts come from different crediting sources. They are shown as a record, not as evidence of individual ability.
